Frequently Asked Questions
Pretty much any food makes great leftovers, as long as you store it in airtight containers. I find that protein like chicken and ground meat, rice, noodles/pasta, quinoa and vegetables all make for great leftovers when stored properly.
Airtight glass meal prep containers are my go-to when it comes to food storage. It keeps your food fresh the longest and prevents any of the chemicals you might find in plastic containers from getting into your food. You can also reheat your leftovers right in the container so you’ll save room on dishes. Just make sure to store any sauces or toppings separately to ensure everything stays as fresh as possible (for example, if you're storing tacos, you'd want to keep the meat, beans and toppings like pineapple or diced tomatoes all separate).
For most of these recipes, your leftovers will be reheated as you cook them with the rest of the ingredients. If you’re reheating leftovers on their own, I recommend sprinkling some water over top of any meat or rice to make sure it doesn’t dry out. It’s also a great way to avoid that dreaded leftover chicken taste!
When it comes to reviving leftovers, you can often keep things super simple. Sauté the leftovers in garlic or add on some seasonings like chili powder, melt some cheese on top, throw on some fresh herbs and more to revive a meal and make it delicious again!
It all depends on what you're storing. Leftover rice, vegetables and meat like chicken, steak and pork are usually all good for up to 5 days, and leftover shrimp or fish is usually good for up to 3 days. Read my post on how long meal prep lasts for more details.

26 Creative Ways to Use Up Leftovers
Ingredients
- 4 (1 L) Mason jars
- 2 leftover cooked chicken breasts shredded
- 4 tsp soy sauce or tamari
- 4 tsp Sriracha chili garlic hot sauce
- 4 tsp lime juice
- 4 vegetable bouillon cubes
- 1/2 cup each julienned broccoli stems, carrots, bell peppers and green onions
- 1 lb package rice vermicelli noodles
- Sunflower sprouts or cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Divide the shredded chicken into each mason jar evenly, then add 1 tsp of soy sauce, Sriracha and lime juice to each jar.
- Layer in vegetables, then drop in bouillon cubes. Finally, finish by dividing vermicelli noodles evenly among each jar and keep in fridge until ready to eat.
- When ready to serve, pour boiling water in to fill jar and carefully stir contents, making sure to dissolve bouillon cube completely and saturate noodles. You may also need to microwave the jar for 1-2 minutes depending on the type of noodles used (some varieties of vermicelli are harder than others). Let the jar sit for 5 minutes before serving.
- Pour contents of the jar into large bowl when ready to eat (should be within 5 minutes of pouring boiling water) and eat right away!
