Frequently asked questions
The typical jerk seasoning flavours come from allspice and thyme, but scotch bonnet peppers also play a huge part and we recommend adding those in fresh alongside your seasoning. They're super spicy so we recommend wearing gloves, removing the seeds and pithy parts before dicing up and then only starting with a small amount.
This seasoning blend itself is not very spicy as there's only a bit of cayenne pepper. Once you add scotch bonnet peppers, which are a key component of jerk seasoning, it can make a recipe pretty spicy.
Jerk seasoning is actually pretty unique so there are no good substitutes for it. If you're looking for something with a kick, you could try replacing with cumin. Allspice and thyme make up the main flavours so if you don't have these, you won't have a good jerk seasoning.
