Ingredients and substitutions
- chili powder – you really do need this ingredient! No swaps here unfortunately
- cumin – you can use chili powder or paprika instead
- coriander – you can use cumin instead
- garlic powder – you can use onion powder instead
- onion powder – you can use garlic powder instead
- paprika – smoked paprika can be used, or chili powder or cumin instead
- chili flakes – you can can omit if needed
- oregano – you can omit if needed

- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tbsp cumin
- 1 tbsp coriander
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp chili flakes
- 1 tsp oregano

No. While taco seasoning and chili seasoning are made up of similar spices, the ratios of those spices are different. Taco seasoning has more cumin, whereas chili seasoning is made up of higher amounts of chili powder and paprika.
If you want to make a mild taco seasoning, you should omit the chili flakes from this spice mix. You can also squeeze on some lime juice after you finish cooking to help neutralize the spiciness.
If you're making tacos with ground beef or turkey, you should add the taco seasoning after it's been browned in a skillet. If your meat is fatty and needs to be drained, make sure to do that before you mix in the taco seasoning.
